About Belmont, NC

Belmont is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina. The Belmont settlement area was founded in the 1750s by James Kuykendall among other Dutch settlers. Initially a fort, the town was built due to Cherokee hostilities.

The town’s name was changed to Belmont from Garibaldi Station in 1883, and in 1895, the area was incorporated as Belmont town. Chronicle Mills began the development of the city as a textile center in 1901.

The town of Belmont has increased its population by 38.4% since 2000. As per 2017, the population was 12,495, equating to a population density of 1,052.31 people per square mile. The overall median age is 38.4 years.
